Sequoiadendron giganteum - sequoia

The wood i got comes from one of this two...

https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequoiadendron_giganteum
or
https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequoia_sempervirens

I was lookin for this wood since long time,
almost bought it from overseas, if the delivery had not been so high..
I got this sequoia from a man who live in Desenzano del Garda.
He took down this tree and keep the pieces for woodworking..
I was lucky, right place right time..
I did not know that the giant sequoia grow even here, in Italy
So I searched in the national database of monumental trees
and I found that in a country not too far from my hometown, there's a garden with twenty giants seequoia, in Pavullo nel Frignano, near Modena.

so i went there with family...

we got there just a few days after this cut...

it was very ispiration place...

the cone

the wood is incredibly tender
the first piece is sanded till 1200,
and it's finish with mineral oil
the second its brushed
and it has any finish
i have one more piece to work with,
i think i'll work soon...

Cheers

Spalted beech root

It's been hard to turn this beech root.
there were wedged several stones like chalk, and I had to sharpen tthe 3/4 bowl gouge so many times, even aggressively too.
the form at the end is questionable, very heavy
especially the support foot, which is too large.
in this case my turning skills have been placed by the wood and how I could keep it spinning on the lathe.
The spalted is gorgeous

From Aan Apricot-tree a spalted bowl

It was a very old tree, with a root on a pit,
too dangerous to stay in the garden of an old villa, which is now a library-museum.
Inside this apricot-tree an anthill party.
Oil finish
